Clam Harbor Yacht Club History

The Clam Harbor Yacht Club is a unique organization.

We say "unique" because of the manner in which it was formed.

It all started in March of 1954 when some of the boys from the Warwick Cove Anchorage decided that they had empty jack staffs on the bows of their boats, and not being yacht club members, it was a shame to let this piece of marine hardware go to waste

Warwick Cove was affectionately known as "Clam Hallow" by many familiar with the area, so Clam Harbor seemed a appropriate nautical name for a yacht club.

A meeting was held at Tom Mayor’s home and it was decided that they should have a club burgee made-up to look something like a big clam with black snout and lying dormant on a red field. (this has since been changed to the present burgee).

No respectable yacht club can function without officers, so at the host’s suggestion they rolled a pair of dice, supplied by the host, to see who would be who.

The event started out delightfully. The six rolled dice to see who would be Commodore with Mayor turning up high dice. What a coincidence! As the dice kept rolling on the carpet, Don Edgerley was appointed Vice-Commodore and his brother Bill rear Commodore. Ralph Kenny got to be the Fleet Captain, while Hugh Loughran was secretary. The Treasurers position was given to Ray Tatro. Jack Loud requested the tittle Fleet Engineer (what ever that was) and was given that.

One of the first principles of the club was that there would be no discrimination. The group was to be composed of all chiefs without indians, Officiers without enlisted men. Now this refreshing idea, condusive to complete anarchy, has gone by the boards. They had 47 members and the titles ran out a long time ago. They even went to the New York Yacht Club and even they didn’t  have enough titles to fill the bill.

As time has gone on, the club has grown considerably. At present time there are over 200 members. Not to bad for a yacht club that has no marina. The main function of the club is a social club. It is the idea to have fun and enjoy the water and friends. We have several outings that we attend with boats, along with dinner dances in the winter months. The highlight of the season is the annual Christmas party held in Newport every Columbus Day weekend. We have over forty boats attend plus members that come by land. Boats are decorated, meals are shared and presents exchanged.

We still have the same organization of Officers along with a new burgee, sweatshirts, tee shirts and hats. We are a chartered group with the state of RI but not on the yacht club register "yet". The members of the club come mostly from RI but we have members from Ma, Ct, NJ, and even CA. We have meetings four times a year with the annual meeting in march for the election of new officers. This is the history of the club as we know it. If we have left something or someone out it was not intended.
